Background and Experience
1. You have quite a diverse background and degrees from Medical schools to Theological studies. Can you, please, share your journey and how it led to your current role as Editor-in-Chief?
My academic journey has been driven by a passion for both medicine and faith. I received my medical degree from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ohio Northern University. My clinical training included residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Hematology, Medical Oncology, and Experimental Therapeutics at the Cleveland Clinic.
What makes my path unique is my interest in the intersection of medicine and religion. This led me to pursue several additional degrees: a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Biblical and Theological Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary, a Master of Public Health from Yale University, a Master of Science in Healthcare Leadership from Brown University, and a Master of Jurisprudence in Healthcare Law and Policy from Texas A&M School of Law.
After practicing at Baylor University Medical Center for 21 years, I now serve as the Director of the UMC Cancer Center and Professor of Medicine at Texas Tech University. My extensive research background and leadership in urologic cancers naturally led to editorial roles, including my current position as Editor-in-Chief of both the Kidney Cancer Journal and The International Journal of Medical Case Reports.
2. What inspired you to work specifically in an open access format?
As someone who has authored over 500 scholarly works and led numerous clinical trials, I've seen firsthand how critical it is for medical knowledge to be widely accessible. Open access publishing democratizes information, allowing healthcare providers worldwide to benefit from the latest research regardless of institutional resources. This aligns with my commitment to advancing cancer care globally and ensuring that innovations in urologic cancer treatment reach practitioners everywhere.
Journal Operations
3. What are the key responsibilities of your role as Editor-in-Chief?
As Editor-in-Chief, I oversee the entire editorial process while maintaining the scientific integrity and relevance of our publications. This includes setting the strategic direction of the journals, recruiting editorial board members, making final decisions on manuscript acceptance, and ensuring our content reflects current research priorities in urologic oncology. Additionally, I leverage my international connections to attract high-quality submissions and promote the journals at medical venues worldwide.
4. How do you ensure the quality and integrity of the articles published in your journal?
Quality assurance starts with assembling an expert editorial board. Having been involved in numerous clinical trials and authored hundreds of publications myself, I understand what constitutes rigorous research. We implement a thorough peer review process, often drawing on my connections from national research groups like the Sarah Cannon Research Institute. My background in healthcare law and policy also helps me address ethical concerns in submissions, while my clinical experience allows me to evaluate practical relevance alongside scientific merit.
Open Access Movement
5. How do you perceive the impact of open access publishing on the dissemination of medical research?
Open access publishing has transformed how medical knowledge spreads, particularly in specialties like urologic oncology. As someone who speaks at international medical venues, I've witnessed how open access journals help bridge knowledge gaps between different regions and resource settings. The ability for physicians worldwide to access cutting-edge research without subscription barriers ultimately benefits patients by accelerating the implementation of new treatments and approaches.
6. What are the biggest challenges facing your journal as an open access publication today?
While open access provides tremendous benefits, maintaining financial sustainability without traditional subscription models presents challenges. Additionally, we must constantly defend against predatory journals that can dilute the credibility of legitimate open access publications. Balancing rigorous peer review with the speed that modern medicine demands is another ongoing challenge. Finally, ensuring our research reaches practitioners in regions with limited internet access or language barriers requires creative solutions.
Content and Focus
7. What types of articles do you find are most impactful for your readership?
Given my background leading clinical trials and researching innovative therapeutics, I've observed that articles featuring novel treatment approaches and clinical trial results generate significant interest. Case reports with unusual presentations or treatment responses are also valuable, which is why I lead The International Journal of Medical Case Reports. Additionally, review articles that synthesize complex research into practical clinical recommendations are highly valued by busy clinicians seeking to implement evidence-based practices.
8. Can you share any recent trends in medical research that you believe will shape future publications in your journal?
The integration of molecular profiling and precision medicine approaches is revolutionizing urologic cancer management. Having led numerous clinical trials, I anticipate increased submissions focusing on biomarker-driven therapies and novel immunotherapy combinations. Additionally, as someone with public health training, I see growing interest in real-world evidence studies that complement traditional clinical trials. The intersection of technological innovations with patient care – including telemedicine applications for cancer management – represents another emerging area for our publications.
Technology and Innovation
9. How has technology influenced the way articles are published and accessed in your journal?
Digital publishing platforms have completely transformed how we disseminate research. With my diverse background spanning medicine, law, and healthcare leadership, I appreciate how technology enables us to incorporate multimedia elements, interactive figures, and supplementary datasets that enhance the educational value of publications. We've also implemented systems for pre-publication online releases of critical findings and digital tools that increase discoverability through search optimization and social media integration.
10. How do you see AI influencing journal development?
AI holds tremendous potential for medical publishing. With my experience in experimental therapeutics and innovative clinical trials, I recognize how AI can enhance peer review by identifying methodological concerns or statistical inconsistencies. It may also help personalize content delivery, directing readers to relevant articles based on their practice patterns. However, maintaining human oversight is essential, particularly for interpreting nuanced clinical findings and ensuring ethical considerations are addressed in research involving new technologies.
Future Directions
11. What are your goals for the journal in the next few years?
Drawing on my experience as Director of the UMC Cancer Center and leadership roles in research, my vision includes expanding our global reach while maintaining rigorous scientific standards.
