Journal Video Introduction
Watch the interview with the Editor-in-Chief of the International Medical Case Reports Journal, Dr. Thomas E. Hutson, (the full interview is 4 minutes). A transcript of the interview is also provided below.
My name is Professor Thomas Hudson.
I am the Editor-in-Chief. I am the director of the UMC Cancer Centre, Director of oncology for Texas Tech University Health Science Centre in Lubbock, Texas in the United States.
I am honoured to be the Editor-in-Chief of this wonderful Medical Case Reports journal. What really inspired me to take on this task was the understanding and the recognition of how important it is to report these medical cases into the literature.
Often times, medical cases of is what prompts the new areas of discovery and can launch themselves into new areas of research.
Also, I recall when I was a medical student, and one of my first publications was writing a medical case report with one of my mentors.
The International Medical Case Reports Journal is an international peer review, open access online journal publishing original case reports from all medical specialists. And these medical specialises can range from internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, neurology, psychiatry, oncology, emergency medicine, radiology, pathology and many more. Those are the most common ones. Submissions should not normally exceed 3,000 words or four published pages, including figures, diagrams, and references.
In the International Medical Case Reports Journal, there are focus areas and they are as follows, knowledge sharing, clinical insight, educational resource, innovation promotion, interdisciplinary collaboration, global perspectives, and evidence based experience.
And this results in, in the following acceptable study types.
So the case types we are looking for would be rare or unusual medical conditions, unexpected complications of common diseases, novel diagnostic approaches, innovative treatment methods, unusual drug interactions or reactions, challenging differential diagnoses, unique surgical cases and others.
The case formats for submissions include single case reports, case series, which should be relatively small groups of related cases. And they can decide on the appropriateness of that, based on each individual submission.
But generally, only a few handful of cases would be considered ideal, image based case reports and video enhanced case presentations.
We are accepting cases from all countries. This is an international journal, so we want worldwide participation, and we want to emphasize the importance of global health perspectives. The patient demographics of the included cases can involve patients of all ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as a variety of different health care settings, just tertiary care facilities, community health centres, rural medical facilities, and telemedicine consultations.
We have arranged a peer review process, incorporating review by colleagues who are experts in their fields and we encourage this interaction between our reviewers and our authors, which will ultimately resolve an improvement in your submitted work and hopefully a learning process for both the journal and for you, the author.
Again this is Doctor Hudson, I am the Editor-in-Chief, and I welcome any and all of your submissions for consideration in the International Medical Case Reports Journal.
